چکیده

Albinism and leucism are phenotypes resulting from impaired melanin pigmentation in the skin appendages. However, of eyes remains unaffected leucism. Here, using transmission electron microscopy, we show that leucistic morph Texas rat snake ( Pantherophis obsoletus lindheimeri ) lacks both melanophores xanthophores its exhibits a uniform ivory white color generated by iridophores collagen fibers. In addition, sequenced full genome individual obtained highly-contiguous near-chromosome quality assembly 1.69 Gb with an N50 14.5 Mb L50 29 sequences. Using candidate-gene approach, then identify single-nucleotide deletion generates frameshift premature termination codon melanocyte inducing transcription factor MITF gene. This mutation shortens translated protein 574 to 286 amino acids, removing helix-loop-helix DNA-binding domain is highly conserved among vertebrates. Genotyping animals independent lineages showed not all individuals carry this deletion. Subsequent gene expression analyses reveal analyzed exhibit significantly decreased MITF. We thus suggest mutations affecting regulation and, some cases, coding sequence , former probably predating latter, could be associated phenotype snakes. involved development survival zebrafish, classical model species for undergoes metamorphosis, larvae adults homozygous mitfa mutants lack melanophores, excess reduced yellow pigmentation. On contrary, snake, non-metamorphic species, only persist. Our results fate determination neural-crest derived xanthophores, but iridophores, require during embryonic development.

Do seasonal patterns of rat snake (Pantherophis obsoletus) and black racer (Coluber constrictor) activity predict avian nest predation?

Avian nest success often varies seasonally and because predation is the primary cause of nest failure, seasonal variation in predator activity has been hypothesized to explain seasonal variation in nest success. Despite the fact that nest predator communities are often diverse, recent evidence from studies of snakes that are nest predators has lent some support to the link between snake activit...

Sources and timing of calcium mobilization during embryonic development of the corn snake, Pantherophis guttatus.

Embryos of oviparous Reptilia (=turtles, lepidosaurs, crocodilians and birds) extract calcium for growth and development from reserves in the yolk and eggshell. Yolk provides most of the calcium to embryos of lizards and snakes. In contrast, the eggshell supplies most of the calcium for embryonic development of turtles, crocodilians and birds. The yolk sac and chorioallantoic membrane of birds ...

Four additional hepatozoon species (Apicomplexa: Hepatozoidae) from north Florida ratsnakes, genus Pantherophis.

Records from a colubrid host are reported for Hepatozoon horridus, described originally from a viperid snake. Hepatozoon horridus in Pantherophis guttatus (Colubridae) has gamonts 14-18.0 by 4.0-5.5 microm, with length by width (LW) 60-99 microm2, and L/W ratio 2.5-3.9. Spherical to elongate, usually ovoid oocysts with L/W ratio 1.0-3.7 contain 16-160 spherical to usually ovoid sporocysts 15-31...

Snake co-occurrence patterns are best explained by habitat and hypothesized effects of interspecific interactions.

Snakes often occur in species-rich assemblages, and sympatry is thought to be facilitated primarily by low diet overlap, not interspecific interactions. We selected, a priori, three species pairs consisting of species that are morphologically and taxonomically similar and may therefore be likely to engage in interspecific, consumptive competition. We then examined a large-scale database of snak...

The genome sequence of the corn snake (Pantherophis guttatus), a valuable resource for EvoDevo studies in squamates.

Squamates (snakes and lizards) exhibit a striking variety of phenotypes, with little known on their generative mechanisms. Studies aiming to understand the genetic basis of this wide diversity in morphology, physiology and ecology will greatly benefit from whole genome sequencing initiatives, as they provide the foundation for comparative analyses and improve our understanding of the evolution,...
